this is different~

sargento came home today and told me about this article he read in our local paper. we had our own discussion on this on i just thought, well this is different-im curious to know what everyone else thinks!
PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk
VERMONT -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.
"PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves," the statement says.
PETA officials say a move to human breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health.
"The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk."
In a statement Ben and Jerry's said, "We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child."

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, Cofounders
Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc.
Dear Mr. Cohen and Mr. Greenfield,
On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters, I'd like to bring your attention to an innovative new idea from Switzerland that would bring a unique twist to Ben and Jerry's.
Storchen restaurant is set to unveil a menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent breast milk procured from human donors who are paid in exchange for their milk. If Ben and Jerry's replaced the cow's milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers-and cows-would reap the benefits.
Using cow's milk for your ice cream is a hazard to your customer's health. Dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, obesity, and prostate and ovarian cancer. The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America's leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow's milk to children, saying it may play a role in anemia, allergies, and juvenile diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease-America's number one cause of death.
Animals will also benefit from the switch to breast milk. Like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, cows are forcefully impregnated every nine months. After several years of living in filthy conditions and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would naturally, their exhausted bodies are turned into hamburgers or ground up for soup.
And of course, the veal industry could not survive without the dairy industry. Because male calves can't produce milk, dairy farmers take them from their mothers immediately after birth and sell them to veal farms, where they endure 14 to 17 weeks of torment chained inside a crate so small that they can't even turn around.
The breast is best! Won't you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching from cow's milk to breast milk in Ben and Jerry's ice cream? Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Tracy Reiman
Executive Vice President

Yeah--I saw this. Um-different is a nice way to put it. It made me want to throw up. I have talked to others about the idea of not using cow milk anymore because you can get plenty of calcium through other methods (ie broccoli) but PETA's option was obviously never even THOUGHT OF much less discussed. You know what would make me sad about this? Women who have chosen to use formula with their babies but who would pump for money.

And you can bet that I would never again buy Ben and Jerry's (not that I ever do now, but I did when we once visited Vermont when I was in high school).

Um--how is PETA proposing to make cheese in all its varied forms and sour cream?

Ok, you asked. How stupid. I love ice cream and all, but who wants to have dairy products come from human mothers? There are SOOOO many issues related to safety by humans. At least you know what cows eat and partake of. Everything is passable by breast milk. This is the dumbest thing I have read about recently. We wouldn't have many cows on this earth if we weren't using them for food. If a Mom wants to do this for her own family, fine. How would you regulate health wise to the rest of the world? I just realized I could write a 25 pg report on this. I probably shouldn't take up all that space. However, I suppose if you like onions in your ice cream... jk

Well I for one do not want to switch places with the cows! The women who are willing to do this are hooked up to a pumping machine just like a cow.....picture it. Not pretty!
And besides....God put the cows here for a purpose. Yes I believe that we should consume in moderation, but most of the problem with all of the allergies and diseases found to be caused by milk are not actually from the milk, but rather from all the chemicals the milk is processed with and the natural pollutants and man made pollutants that the cow injests.
So how would that be different if they use breastmilk? They would still have to process it somehow and who knows what the mothers are eating? Whatever they eat goes straight into the milk....so, I think I trust the cows more....they have a strict diet!
Sorry about this long reply....I just think this is the most silly thought I have ever heard!

I agree with everyone else. As one who is currently nursing, I would not volunteer any of my milk, and I would never take anyone else's!

I love the saying "the best thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother". My husband does an amazing job of that. I am truly married to my best friend. We laugh often and try to see the best in every situation, or at least find the humor in it. We have four beautiful children. Cullan (7) Kael (6) Briea (3) and Ayla (2). We are currently living in Illinois while Garran attends Grad School. He is a talented print maker and is enjoying his time here. He has a website if you are interested. www.garrangillespie.com Right now we are living every day to the fullest and trying to have as much fun as possible along the way!!

This explains why I blog so much RIGHT?

“Your journal is your autobiography, so it should be kept carefully. You are unique, and there may be incidents in your experience that are more noble and praiseworthy in their way than those recorded in any other life. …
“What could you do better for your children and your children’s children than to record the story of your life, your triumphs over adversity, your recovery after a fall, your progress when all seemed black, your rejoicing when you had finally achieved?”

I need to read this every morning!

"It isn't as bad as you sometimes think it is. It all works out. Don't worry. I say that to myself every morning. It all works out in the end. Put your trust in God, and move forward with faith and confidence in the future. The Lord will not forsake us. He will not forsake us. If we will put our trust in Him, if we will pray to Him, if we will live worthy of His blessings, He will hear our prayers."
