St Pats in Chicago!

HELLO CHICAGO!
yes we were crazy and took 8 children and 4 adults in to the city for the St. Patricks day celebrations!
we got up Friday and made our way into the city, which is only about an hour from our house.
by the time we got there, it was time for lunch. we decided we wanted to try some real Chicago pizza.

this place was recommended to us. so we thought we would give it a try.

we thought the kids would think that it was fun because you can write on the walls. (we all know from my previous posts that my kids are experts at writing on walls!)

so we decided on what to order and just decided to relax. we had fun chatting and the kids played at a table next to us. unfortunately the service was horrible. HORRIBLE. our waitress never came to fill our drinks. they brought the kids meals, but did not bring drinks for them. she said she figured we did not want them. WHAT?!?!
anyways an hour after ordering our food finally came. (still with no drinks)
I am thinking Ed's face sums up what we thought of the pizza!

not our favorite.
oh well maybe we will try something different next time we are in the city!
after lunch we checked into our hotel (thanks George!!!)
we got everything settled there and headed to Lincoln Park Zoo.

Little did we know, we did not pick the best day to come. a lot of the exhibits were closed, however we still had fun walking around the park.

we looked and looked for animals. i found these two hiding in an observation tunnel.

this was one of the few animals we did see and this was the only view we got! ;0)
We did find this super cute area and decided to take some family pictures quick.

Palmers

us!

we walked around some more looking for some thing fun to see. the boys even took turns riding in Ollie's wheel chair every once in a while.
after the zoo, we headed back to the hotel to let the kids swim in the pool and just relax. after all Saturday was going to be the big day!
we woke up early to get our selves all festive!
oh the things this sweet man will go along with to help me make fun memories!
i personally think green looks very good on him.
of course he was not the only one that i got all done up for our big day.
Kael got so many compliments on his hair.
our fam ready to head our for the day.
the palmers are ready too. can't you tell how excited Eden is?
I think Kael and Jaren won the award for most festive.
and so the crazy day began. we headed out with 4 adults, 3 strollers, 1 wheel chair, and eight kids.
to say the least, it was a crazy adventure!
we stopped at the only place we could find on the way to the parade and grabbed some hot chocolate, (it was kind of chilly) and some other breakfast goodies.
Stacy had never EVER been to a Dunkin Doughnuts. Of course I had to take a picture to capture the moments. These kinds of things don't happen every day!
After breakfast, we went to watch them dye the water green. This was really fun. I know my kids thought it was pretty cool. Although this was the beginning of the end when it came to easily navigating through the crowds.
Here we are in front of the green water. cullan was really cold. so we had to move quickly.
we snapped one of the palmers too. just to prove they were there ;0)
Here is Ollie checking it out. Like I said the crowds were crazy.
there were people lining the bridges, streets. they were everywhere.
i decided to try and snap one more. at least i got almost everyone looking at the camera and that lovely green water. woo hoo for me!
well after this we had to stop for some mittens. ya it was a little chilly. then off to find the parade. this was an adventure in and of itself. we basically just followed the crowds. we had watched the news that morning, but where they had said the parade would be was wrong. go figure. so it all worked out. following the crowd was just fine in this instance.
on our way, there were all kinds of crazy things going on, but there was this kid standing in the middle of a closed off bridge. i thought he was so cute and what a funny idea. i have no idea if he got any kisses but i do think its hilarious that up in the corner it says... Girls Only!
some how we made it through the crowds to find a spot. it was not great but it was ours. well..for a while. here are the boys waiting for the parade to start.
i think this was the happiest we all were at the parade. i don't mind crowds that much, but i really hate when people are rude to my kids. I am sure you are thinking, "Meghan, of course there are going to be drunk crazy people everywhere. ". Ya i got that, it was the sober ones that made me a little upset. but ever with all that we still managed to have a few good laughs and make some memories.
see, look how happy oliver looks.
we even got to hear some bag pipers.....
(ya you can see how far back we were in the crowd from this picture)
however, that cuteness in the far left, with the hot pink jacket on is Briea. Daddy was nice enough to crowd surf up there so that she could see a little bit of the parade.
and a green trolley. however after a while, it was time to go.
the parade was three hours long, and our poor kids were just not going to make it through a parade that they could not see half of. so we decided it was time to move on and continue our adventure and have some more fun.
we left the parade and headed over to millennium park.
of course we had to get a picture with the giant bean!
some of us girls!

and of course some couple shots. got to have those. ;0)
we did not stay at the park long either. it was craziness there and their were a lot of people that for some reason were not feeling very well. (wink wink)
so unfortunately we had to hit the road so that our kids did not have to watch the show of people getting sick. not to pretty. our next stop was going to be great though and we did not even know it.
stacy had been in contact with a man whose niece had passed away from a DIPG tumor and he lived in the city. he was a pastry chef for the Marriott in downtown Chicago. he invited all of us to a behind the scenes tour of what he does.
Here is Nic showing the kids just some of the treats he had ready for them. He had three different kinds of cheese cakes, a carrot, a banana, a chocolate, and a coconut cake. He also had chocolate creme brulee. On top off all that he had stuff for sundaes, with every topping imaginable. oh yeah and i forgot. he also had stuff ready so that the kids could dip strawberries in chocolate and decorate them.
as we were standing there, cullan looks up at me and says "mom, i have been waiting for this my whole life!".
here is eden decorating some of the strawberries with white chocolate.
the boys hard at work. i love that cullan has his tongue hanging out. that means he is really working hard.
the finished strawberries.
did i mention how awesome Nic was with the kids. He was amazing. He said that having the kids there reminded him of his nieces and nephews and home. He was such a great guy.
after decorating strawberries...next came sundaes.
ya did i mention...EVERY POSSIBLE TOPPING.
i could not believe all of the trouble he went to. what a great treat for Oliver and all the kids.
I am sure you can imagine how excited the kids were to get to make their own sundaes.
Kael's looks like a work of art.
Cullan just looks like he is already in a sugar comma!
Before we left, I snapped a quick picture of the Palmers and Nic.
We had so much fun with him. He is an amazing pastry chef. Let me just say that if you are EVER in the city and are at the Marriott. order the Banana Cake!
Oh my goodness. It was like a little slice of heaven!
Delicious!
oh and there chocolate creme brulee is pretty awesome as well.
as we were leaving the hotel in a sugar bliss i saw this.
i don't know if i was just high on banana cake or what but I thought this was really funny and took a picture. I know it is potty humor...hahaha....get it, potty humor.
ok..moving on.
well i just thought i would end things on a cute note.
i mean...really...could it get any cuter than this.
nope, i just don't think so.
we had a wild adventure, with lots of funny stories and great memories.
i am so happy that we were brave enough to do it and that we have pictures to remember it by.
hope everyone has a great st. patty's day!!
ps. im posting all our extra pics on facebook.

special dinner

Kody-Octavio-Oliver
All three boys were diagnosed around the same time, with in months of each other.
our friends the Palmers came into town on Thursday. they had made arrangements to meet up with some other families that had children with the same brain tumor as Ollie (DIPG), that actually lived pretty close to us. so we had dinner together. the Palmers said that they would like us to come with them. while we had a great time meeting the other families, it was such a humbling dinner. all of these children were great. their families were great. it was humbling to be sitting there with four healthy children. when garran and I left, we both said in the car how we needed to count our blessings more often. these boys are all remarkable and special in their own ways. it was truly a privilege to get to meet them and get to know them and their families.

oh to be a fly on the wall

This morning started like most mornings. Somehow everyone ends up in our room after waking up and we usually talk for a few minutes before starting the day.
So if you were a fly on our wall this morning this is what you would hear.
Our morning started with a story from Cullan about a baby who had lost it's license and the adventure it went on to find it. Next he asked if it would be ok if he sang Ayla a "Lully-bar". This was also a Cullan original. He is quite the song writer.
While listening to the song, I commented to Garran about how stiff my back was again this morning ( I have been having some back issues for a while now) when Cullan heard this he said that he would be more than happy to give me a "mirage". This basically means that he karate chops my back for 5 minutes. So I laid on my stomach and Cullan pulls the back of my shirt up a bit and begins his karate chopping "mirage". Well what one brother does, so must another. So as Kael starts to give me a "mirage" also, Cullan exits a little grumpy and heads down stairs.
As Kael continues to give me a "mirage" he asks those oh so wonderful questions that children do. "Mom, what are these funny scratches?" as he is tracing them with his fingers on my side. "Well Kael, those aren't scratches, those are stretch marks.". Kael replies "How did you get those?" I try to respond as positively as possible that I got them from when he and all of his siblings were in my tummy. That seemed to answer that and on to the next round of questioning.
Kael again asks "eww mom, why do you have this red dot on your back?". Garran looks at it and says "that is just a mole Kael.". Kael digest that info for a minute and then proceeds with this.
Then he looks at Garran and says in a nutshell that he was really surprised to find out that I had ants living in my back and that this red dot must be the ant temple!
So on that note I get up to start my day as a "scratched up ant temple"...sigh.... if only i had got more sleep last night.
alas i did not. Kael entered our room somewhere around 3 am. He climbed into bed to which Garran was not happy, but I was frankly to tired to fight, so I just let him lay by me. As he gets all snug under the blanket with me he decides that it is time to chat. After about ten minutes, I say that it is really time to get to sleep. A few minutes later I hear "Mom, do you have a pillow that I can have?". SIGH! (that came from me) "Yes Honey". So I have two pillows. One that is really nice and fluffy and then another that is older and pretty flat, but that I just use to give me a little extra fluff. Well I accidentally hand him my really nice fluffy pillow and before I can realize it I hear "thanks mom, this is going to make me so comfy!". ARGGGGG. Whatever. So I take the flat pillow and toss and turn for the rest of the night.
So if you were a fly on our wall this morning, this is what you would have heard.
Happy Wednesday!

he has been drawing a lot lately, and while doing so he says...
"i am trying to create my masterpiece!"

only because briea started calling her that because she can't say Ayla!)

so cute.

B.

I just love this picture.
I just do.

family days.

I love when we get to spend days together as a family. This was what we did last weekend. We had so much fun and laughed so much. I look forward to more days like this!

Party TIme!

Brieas birthday was a pretty laid back affair this year. We just have an insane amount of stuff going on and life in general just seems to be going faster and faster with no signs of slowing.
( i think that last part might be a line from charlie and the chocolate factory)
anyways, we opened presents, had a family dinner that B choose and then had a special Cupcake Party!
B got some fun cup cake lip gloss. She loves to help me put make up on and so when I saw this, I knew she would love it. Now it is with Mommy s makeup and we get ready together.
She also got a lovely princess backpack. She really loves backpacks. She had been dragging around the boys spiderman bags for a while and we decided that it might be time she has one of her own.
she also go a baby doll and a stroller. LOVES IT!
she was showing daddy all her pretty make up here. she would put some on and then look at him and he would tell her how pretty she was. she would just beam. it was so sweet.
time for cake!
I found a great pan on clearance after Valentines day. It makes a giant cupcake. So I made a giant cupcake and had some little cupcakes around it. we also bought some funky candles that all the kids liked.
briea got lots of birthday calls wishing happy birthday and sending lots of love. i know she felt so special. she would dance around while on the phone and tell whoever she was talking to "happy berfday you, i 2, luv oo, bye bye!!" melted my heart every time.
it was a fun day with lots of happy memories.
so for the last time.....
Happy 2nd Birthday to our Sweet Briea!

Miss B

Look at this Sweet Girl.
Today she is 2!
I love her more than words.
I love this picture too. It sums her up so well. Wild hair to go with her wildness. Sweet smiles to go with her sweet personality and a pickle seed on her chin.
She loves her "kickels"
I love that Briea is part of our family.
I love that she is my daughter.
These have been 2 great years!
Happy Birthday to the little girl that caused me to smile all day after leaving the doctors office when we found out we were having you!
We love you MORE than words!

V-I-C-T-O-R-Y

well I just wanted to update everyone on my on going battle with the local DMV.
i went today, stood in line for an hour and then finally walked up to the desk. I had all of my paper work out and ready to go. I had rehearsed what I was going to say over and over again in my head about how we had contacted the bank, and how they had said we had all they same paperwork that they did. I was ready. I knew I was not leaving that DMV without those license plates. So I am standing first in line. I hear "NEXT". I look. It is the same girl I dealt with the last time. So I am even more ready now. GAME ON!
I walk up to the counter and say "Hi, I have all my paperwork, as I have been here a couple times." She takes the paper work and before I can even start my whole speech I had rehearsed about how this was the same paper work from last time and how the bank said they would just have to use that she flips through the stack of papers and says "Looks Good"!
WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I stood there in disbelief.
WHAT??
 Looks Good????
This is the same thing I brought last time, when I stood in line for an hour, with a sticker on my butt!
I tried not to look like I was about to go crazy, but I could feel a small twitch coming on. So I just took my license plates and left.
Thank Goodness I do not have to do that again for a long time!!!

our story

I love the saying "the best thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother". My husband does an amazing job of that. I am truly married to my best friend. We laugh often and try to see the best in every situation, or at least find the humor in it. We have four beautiful children. Cullan (7) Kael (6) Briea (3) and Ayla (2). We are currently living in Illinois while Garran attends Grad School. He is a talented print maker and is enjoying his time here. He has a website if you are interested. www.garrangillespie.com Right now we are living every day to the fullest and trying to have as much fun as possible along the way!!

This explains why I blog so much RIGHT?

“Your journal is your autobiography, so it should be kept carefully. You are unique, and there may be incidents in your experience that are more noble and praiseworthy in their way than those recorded in any other life. …
“What could you do better for your children and your children’s children than to record the story of your life, your triumphs over adversity, your recovery after a fall, your progress when all seemed black, your rejoicing when you had finally achieved?”
Elder Spencer W Kimball!

I need to read this every morning!

"It isn't as bad as you sometimes think it is. It all works out. Don't worry. I say that to myself every morning. It all works out in the end. Put your trust in God, and move forward with faith and confidence in the future. The Lord will not forsake us. He will not forsake us. If we will put our trust in Him, if we will pray to Him, if we will live worthy of His blessings, He will hear our prayers."
